I've finished housing for UCLA and am really relieved these days.
So, I've restarted reading again to prepare for my future study in the States.
I'd better to record my opinions about books I read and movies I see.
I'd like to review the novel called " The Picture of Dorian Gray" written by Oscar Wilde.
The story is not so complicated for his novels, though " The Importance of Being Ernest", I suppose, one of the most confusing plays in the world..
Dorian Gray, a brilliant and beautiful man, meets Lord Henry Wotton at the studio of Basil. He's using Dorian as a model for his painting. Henry tells Dorian about his epicurean view on life and the value of his beauty. Dorian was really moved by those words. When Basil shows his brand new painting of him, Dorian is overwhelmed by his fear; He is afraid of getting old and becoming ugly as time goes by. He becomes jealous because while he is getting old and gray, the picture remains the same. After that, he comes to wish that it would be the other way around. Soon after, Henry and Dorian Becomes friends because Henry is actually fascinated by his appearance, on the other hand, Dorian is still moved by his cynical words on men's lives. But Basil is afraid that Henry will give Dorian some bad influence and corrupt his youth. After the Dinner with Henry, Dorian confesses his love of Sybil Vane, young actress working in small theatre. Dorian promised to be married until Dorian, Basil, and Henry come to see her performance....
The main theme of this novel is obviously the influence and corruption of young man.
Dorian begins in this novel as innocent man, but later, under Henry's influence, he becomes corrupt, and gradually influence other youths himself. one of the questions in this novel is that the responsibility for the misdeeds done by the person, for Dorian in this novel, it is particularly Sybil's suicide. This novel can be seen as a kind of lesson in taking responsibilities for actions, but when reconsidering the situations of others,Dorian puts the blame at their own feet rather than considering the role that he might have played in their deadfall.
The second hidden theme of this novel maybe homosexuality, there are clearly undertones the relationship between Dorian and a few young man whose lives are said to have ruined, Alan Campbell.
I'm very sorry for my messing note, I just can't integrate my idea as thesis-typed style. obviously, the second theme needs to be concerned at once:(
Anyway, The movie version will be coming soon in the US!
I gotta go now, please listen to YYZ, Taken from the album " Moving Picture" by the Progressive Canadians rock band RUSH.

Hum, I enjoyed your post. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to post my comment, however. It's the Japanese characters for me.
返信削除Go and visit Charles's site - he's a published writer and appreciates comments. He might even have a thing for Rush - he's a metal fan...
